Changes in the Workforce in 2020
Updated: Feb 19
In the past, we have seen the way millennials have reformed the workplace. As we enter into a new decade, the demands and requirements that millennials have will continue to shape the workplace, now more than ever. In 2020, millennials will make up more than half of the workforce. With the labor market being full of them, here are some of the changes we can expect to occur in the workforce in the following years:
Every company wants the most skilled individuals, making the competition for these employees fierce. Recruiters will spend more time developing initiatives and researching ways to attract these top-talented individuals to work for them. One of the ways we have seen them do so is by offering perks in the workplace. Over the past few years, we have seen offices develop into a fun playful environment full of free food and unlimited work from home days. These work perks provide incentives for millennials, but will they continue to work in the following decade?
Offering these work perks are great, but those aren’t the only things millennials seek when job searching. If companies want to harness the massive potential of the future workplace, they’ll have to offer more to their employees. Millennials seek jobs that have stability and ones that provide them with the feeling of value. They are a generation that is eager for growth in themselves as well as their positions.
As technology advances, so does our work habits. Technology has streamlined the way we communicate with others around the world. With the ability to communicate through technology, we are not as dependent on face-to-face communication anymore. This has allowed businesses to hire employees around the world and still be connected to them. In this new decade, we will continue to see an increase in remote work offices. With the increase in remote working offices, the standard 9-5 working hours will also change depending on the location of these employees.
With workplaces located all around the world, companies will become more diverse than ever. Having a diverse workplace has many proven benefits such as higher employee engagement, retention, and increased profits.
By the end of this decade, artificial intelligence will be prominent in every area of business. We have seen the way AI has taken over mundane tasks already and this will continue, allowing businesses to prioritize tasks that are more complex and creative. AI will also provide more data for companies to analyze. The implementation of artificial intelligence will provide information that will be key components in business decisions.
Well-being of employees
Millennials are strong advocates on the importance of taking mental health seriously. This decade many businesses will stress an importance on it by providing mental health days to employees. Having these days to refresh and reset will help to increase business productivity and decrease workplace burnout.
Another characteristic of millennials is they want to see a change in the environment and want to be a part of it. We have seen how businesses have banned plastic goods, reduced paper waste, and recycled electronics. Businesses will continue to be conscious and find alternatives around the office.
There are sure to be a lot of changes this coming decade. We look forward to what the next few years have in store and we hope you do too.
